Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium (EMC)
Manufacturing Skills Excellence Initiative
Magnet partnered with the Excellence in Manufacturing Consortium to support the Manufacturing Skills Excellence Initiative by transforming a novel skills-clustering dataset into accessible, data-driven tools. The project focused on translating complex, employer-informed skills intelligence into practical insights for workforce planning and training design.
Magnet played a central role in:
- Led the analysis and interpretation of a new skills-clustering dataset
- Designed and developed interactive Tableau dashboards for public use
- Translated complex skills data into clear, actionable workforce insights
- Structured data to support occupation- and sub-sector-level analysis
This work enabled the practical application of skills-based intelligence in workforce and training decisions.
Problem Statement
Manufacturing employers are facing increasing pressure to adapt to technological change, evolving production processes, and shifting skills requirements. While new forms of skills-based data were emerging, they had not yet been translated into tools that could be easily understood or applied by employers, HR professionals, or training providers. Existing labour market information often focused on occupations rather than the underlying skills driving change within roles. Without accessible and actionable skills intelligence, organizations faced challenges in designing relevant training, hiring effectively, and planning for future workforce needs.
Solutions & Approach
Magnet led the transformation of a complex skills-clustering dataset into user-friendly, interactive dashboards that visualize emerging skills by occupation and manufacturing sub-sector. Our approach combined advanced data analysis with intuitive design, ensuring that previously unstructured and abstract data could be explored and understood by a broad audience. We worked closely with stakeholders to align the tool with real-world workforce planning and training use cases. By focusing on clarity, usability, and practical application, we converted a proof-of-concept dataset into a functional, decision-support resource.
