With the help of Magnet’s digital infrastructure, employers in Calgary are recruiting and retaining talent across high-demand sectors.

              About

Calgary Economic Development (CED) is partnering with local post-secondary institutions to create pathways into high-demand sectors by increasing the number of students participating in work-integrated learning (WIL) placements with local employers.

CED promotes Calgary as a prime destination for businesses and job seekers. As part of its mandate, CED develops programs and partnerships that attract new talent to Calgary and help local businesses meet their recruitment needs.

              Solution

Magnet supports CED with a branded landing page where employers can create a free account to post WIL opportunities and hire  students from post-secondary institutions across Alberta and beyond. In addition to sharing job postings through Outcome Campus Connect, which enables employers to reach student talent at more than 125 post-secondary job boards. After posting a job, employers can offset hiring and training costs by applying for wage-subsidy funding through  the Student Work Placement Program (SWPP).

Magnet’s capacity to collect labour market information from job postings uploaded to the platform also supports relevant data collection that helps CED better understand the evolving demands of local employers.

              Strategic Alignment/Impact

Magnet and Orbis/Symplicity joined this project to form a technology consortium and develop a regional solution that connected small and medium-sized enterprises with student talent and funding to deliver WIL opportunities for students.

In response to the increasing importance of WIL in training Canada’s future workforce, Magnet and CED are demonstrating the viability and importance of a regional WIL model that enables employers to recruit and retain student talent from local post-secondary institutions, while providing a path for recent graduates to settle in the region.
